Caterham Seven

I am here again with a all-new car. It was showed at first time in the past MADbrick event.(May 1-5th)

The Caterhan Seven (also called Caterham 7) is the present version of the original Lotus Seven (or Lotus 7) designed by Colin Champan in 1957.


This car is very famous because it is extremly ligth, and it has outstanding dinamic specs, which make this car perfect for its use in competition and track days.

This creation is made in scale 1:7. Thus remains in 29 studs wide, 56 of length and 20 fo high(23x45x16cm).
The weigth is 2.2kgs.
It has around 2500 parts.


As all my MOCs, this includes some remote controlled functions:
- Steering (PF M motor)
- Drive (PF 2XL motors)
- Sequential 5+R speeds gearbox (PF Servo motor)
- Disc brakes (PF M motor)


This car arrives with a 5+R speeds version of the all-new 3th generation of my sequential gearboxes. The new generation is even more compact and reliable. Of course it has auto.clutch



The speeds ratio:

R - 2.08:1
1 -  1.67:1
2 -  1.25:1
3 -  1:1
4 -  1:1.33
5 -  1:1.67


It has a gear indicator in the cabin.



Just behind the seats, over the rear axle are the battery and the drive motors (2XL)


The Seven design is based in a tubular unibody frame with double wishbone front independent suspension and DeDion rear live axle.

The front axle is double wishbone type with caster angle, camber angle and ackerman steering.


The original Lotus 7 had a typical rear live axle, and the newest and powerfull version has independent suspension , but the most common rear axle is the DeDion axle. Like the real one, this creation has rear 3-links DeDion axle(you can see it in more detail in the video)

This creationa also has working brakes in all wheels(the same brakes used in my Land-Rover)



Like the real Seven, this creation mantains the unibody frame. Also to reduce the weigth, the frame and the bodywork are the same thing. The yellow liftarms in both sides of the car are the bodywork, but at the same time are the frame of the car.

You can remove in 2 minutes the bonnet, the drive train and the brakes lever, and then you will get this:

  1. ofcorse I like it but there isn't really much info about the rear suspension system. And also the third'th generation of sequential gearbox?? I don't want to have any misunderstandings ofcorse. it's a wonderfull car but there isn't much info :(

  5. Cool that you used a sevo motor for the gearbox this time, i tried to use one for the Land Rover, but it wasn't strong enough... anyway, great MOC!

  8. his clucth isnt centrifugal, his cluth is a driving ring with a 16 tooth gear

  13. the way I see it: the whole gearbox+ fake engine can be replaced so it should be possible to create seperate building instructions for the gearbox just like the bugaati and the mini s gearboxes

  14. Tuur, the third generation is somewhat tough to see, but certain developments are to be distuinguished. IN the Veyron, Sheepo use a 8448 like 24-16 Reverse gear linkage, resulting in irregular jumps in max rpm (10%,50%,10% etc). The shifting mechanism was bulky and made sideways.
    The defender (and following) uses the more evenly torque jumps (alternating 25% and 33%), which wasn't that hard to come up with. Besides that the bulky shifting mechanism was replaced by an overhead slender version. Clearly a great move forward, and thus the second generation, I presume.

    Now the progress in this Super Seven MOC is somewhat unclear, and the whole system seems larger than the Defender type. But the movie reveals that an important mechanism in the shifting proces is a 40tooth gear with mountings instead of a shifting sled.
    It keeps us puzzled....;-)

  18. Hi Sheepo,
    SUre I understand there is more than meets the eye. But I like it that way. Your marvels show us that it is possible, but keeps us tinkering ourselves to see if we can get there.
    My personal favourite is (still) your Defender-box, although I must state that is without taken the Peterbilt in consideration; you haven't shown any of the technique of that one inside. Glad to see that you have made a smaller MOC than the Peterbilt, and you haven't let your self be forced in an even more megalomane project.
    At this moment I'm working on an RC gearbox, In Veyron style. Just trying, but when you keep adding gear-axles, to over a 9+R gearbox, the drag of the axles appears to grow too large for an engine to cope with properly. Does this sound familiar to you? I've made sure all connections are quite loose. All are 20-12 connections.

  20. I did the Peterbilt in that huge scale with one idea in my mind: built it at the same scale as my other cars... but in the way I lose too many things... I think this truck is "the forgotten" creation, beacause it is much more complex, and uses much more new techniques than any other moc(except the Porsche...)... I will talk more about it in the future.
    About the friction with many axles...yes, it sounds familiar to me hahaha

    I don't put it on cuusoo because, even if the car gets the votes, Lego can decide if they made it or not. My Land-rover got the votes and is almost impossible that Lego made it :(

  25. Great car!! But you don't play with as as you did after... it would be great if you put the progress of your proyects!! It would keep us entertained and could let us learn more and do some bets... Hahaha

  26. Sheepo, I built myself an extended Veyron like gearbox with Mini shift machanism (the stepper version just seems to big and complicated). The mini box appears - in my version ;-) - extremely unreliable, with the gear selector sled not slipping into the proper hole, just holding on to a little edge found in the sled mechanism. Does this sound familiar to you?
    As I believe more in the power of community than the power of currency (when it comes to Lego MOC's), how did you fix this with the Defender gearbox?

    my dad has a yellow caterham roadsport and got it the week before this was published and they both look 99.99% alike but my dads is not that small.
    but anyway I was gobsmacked when I saw the mechanism that compact I thought something that small would not have a transmission that complex.

  36. sheepo, could you please help me with a gearbox, im building an audi r10 TDi, (5+r gearbox) i cant find a small and reliable enough solution to make the gearbox sequential. and BTW the car is in the scale that it uses the 8448 wheels the same as on your porches wheels

  42. This comment will seem strange, but where did you put the IR receivers? I always assumed they needed line-of-sight to work properly, and unless they are hidden amongst the black structure I haven't a clue where you've stuffed them!

  43. The IR receivers are just under the seats. The IR receptor point shows across the seats, look closely the pictures ;)
