Modular Platform System

Probably the most popular vehicles to build MOCs are the Supercars.
We all love cars and the more fast and sports better, but if someone wants to make a Technic Supercar in big size and some complexity (scale 1/10 is the most used) and you don't have a good knowledge of the techniques, build it can be very complicated and end up as hopeless.

This system was created with the idea of helping all those people who want to make a supercar at scale between 1/9 and 1/10 and still not have enough knowledge to start, or want to make a car with more advanced specs as Ackerman steering, camber angle and do not know how to do it.

What is a Modular Platform System?

A modular platform system is a set of mechanical elements 100% compatible with each other to suit your needs.

In this case the system haves of three elements: front axles, central chassis and rear axles.
These elements are designed so that you can combine as you like, you choose the front axle you want, the frame that you like and rear axle, join it directly and you have your perfect base for your Supercar!!

All axles are designed and tested for use 68.8x36 ZR tires which are very common and good aesthetics.

Important note: The instructions are made with SR3D because in LDD doesn't exist some of the parts used, as the suspension arms 6L...

Elements description

Front Axles (code: F)

Standard design, rules for a 100% compatible axle with all chassis:

- The total width with wheels 68.8x36ZR has to be 25 studs (19 without wheels)
- The axle only can be attached to the chassis through the support points.
- The drive shaft must enter into the chassis by the center and 3 studs high.
- The drive shaft has to turn left when the car goes forward.

Recommendations for construction:

- Best if the steering column is on one side
- The distance between the start of the chassis support point and the center axle of the wheel must be of 7.5 studs.
- Be able to convert to right steering wheel easily
- Suspension movement between 1 and 2 studs
- Free space to the floor between 1 and 2 studs

Note: green axle joint in the digital model indicate the steering drive.

Also each axle will have a Index card like this:

Standard: Y/N ->why?
Max. shock adsorvers allowed: max. shock absorvers you can put for each wheel
Space for an auxiliary transmission under the differential: Y/N
Easy conversion to right steering wheel:Y/N
Advanced steering ans suspension geometry:
 - Ackerman steering

 - Camber angle

 - Caster angle

 - Kingpin inclination

Notes: Another information about the axle

Chassis (or Frame) (code: C)

Standard design, rules for a 100% compatible chassis with all axles:

- The front support points must be like this picture:

- The rear support points must be like this  picture:

- The chassis can not continue out the start of support points, like this picture:

- It must have space to connect the drive shaft of both axles

Recommendations for construction:

- Find the best rigidity but using minimum space
- Try to change the length(and therefore the wheel base) was as easy as possible

Also each chassis will have a Index card like this:

Standard: Y/N->why?
Wheel base: Total wheel base including axles
Width: total width od the chasis
Strength test:
 - Load
 - Torsion
Notes: Another information about the chassis.

Rear axles (code: R)

Standard design, rules for a 100% compatible axle with all chassis:

- The total width with wheels 68.8x36ZR has to be 25 studs (19 without wheels)
- The axle only can be attached to the chassis through the support points.
- The drive shaft must enter into the chassis by the center and 3 studs high.
- The drive shaft has to turn left when the car goes forward.

Recommendations for construction:

- The distance between the start of the chassis support point and the center axle of the wheel must be of 5.5 studs.
- Suspension movement between 1 and 2 studs
- Free space to the floor between 1 and 2 studs

Also each axle will have a Index card like this:

Standard: Y/N->why?
Max shock adsorvers allowed:
Advanced suspension geometry (Camber angle):
Notes: Another information about the axle

  7. If you want to learn to use SR3D read this users guide: http://staff.polito.it/sergio.reano/SR%203D%20Builder%20%28EN%29.pdf

  8. I am hoping to use this system to make a new 2012 Ford Focus. I was hoping you could help me with your technic magic by designing a multilink rear suspension similar to the Control-Blade multilink rear suspension used in the Ford Focus. I dont need it too soon so i can wait until your current projects are complete and you have the time. Thank you.

  10. how do i get instructions from the files provided????

  11. You can do it using SR3D + MLcad + LPub4.0, but it is not necessary to built the axles.. if you need it yu must learn more about lego technic...

  12. Can you give me a link to dowload sr3d builder because I dont find anything in the web thanks

  13. Are you serious? you only need search in google "sr3d" and the first result is the web of the program... search before as..

  14. I would only like to suggest one improvement to your site, if you have the links take you to the system stated, that would be nice.

  16. You are awesome, I am wondering why you are doing Civil instead of Motorsport/Automotive?

I have just completed third year of Motorsport Engineering.

  19. I can't load two of MPS's models
    F.CD.1.1A
    F.CD.1.1B
I'm using SR3D version 0.8.9.16 & updated DirectX - but it display all the time this error message [Unleaded exception has occurred....]
out of that that collection is fabulous :-)

  21. I absolutely love your work, Sheepo, but I only wish that somebody would finally make some .PDF files for the MPS instructions and parts lists, because my computer cannot open the SR3D at all. Is there any possibility for that in the near future ?

  22. Yes, this is an awesome creation, but I don't want to download SR3D Builder because of the numerous system requirements. PLEASE make a Lego Digital Designer file, or even better, a PDF file for instructions. Please make a PDF!

  23. hey sheepo, i am trying to download the mps stuff on a mac (for a corvette project) and whenever i try to open a file, it says that i "don't have an application to open it in" or something like that. do you have any idea why, and if so could you tell me? thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  24. The fastest answer is: forget MAC and buy a PC... but I will try to be more usefull: 1- download LDraw software, 2- Change the file extension you want to open from .L3B to .LDR, 3- Open it with LDraw

  25. thank you! i will try it

  26. Very nice work! But I cant open the building instructions in SR3D...
If I click on tools and then instrucionsminer, only the pieces you used are showed me :( HELP

    ReplyDelete
  27. You can't generate building instructions automatically with SR3D, it is not LDD... You must built your own looking the 3D model directly

    1. Please do the photo instructions or LDD file we can't open this documents

  28. Do you use this system in your super cars ?

  29. No, I use even more complex axles. But actually the main axles are very similar.

  30. Hi Sheepo, is there a front suspension without the grey steering arm? 'cause I haven't...
    thank you!

  31. Hello Sheepo. I'm making a Porsche 911 Targa awd. I need a Mac Pherson suspension with drive. When I download your instructions, it won't open and make an error. Can you help me?

  32. Hi Sheepo. Can you make a front multilink with drive?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Does front multilink even exist?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hi. I have designed your mc pherson but my shock absorbers, wrecked and it,s kind of not straight when you look at it from hieght. Is this normal or not?

    ReplyDelete
  35. The axle should work fine, if not maybe you have built something wrong

    ReplyDelete
  36. I found the problem thanks. I wanted to know does the axle has tow in or tow out?

    ReplyDelete
  37. And can you tell me how to get Sr3d? Do I need other programs? Because I was watching the instructions in my friends laptop. Thanks.
