Mercedes-Benz 300SL '54 (Gullwing)

I am here with my lastest car. I showed it in the LEGO World Utrecht 2015.

It is one of the most famous sports car in history, and the fastest production car on its time, the legendary Mercedes-Benz 300SL, usually called "Gullwing".

It is built in scale 1/10.5. With a final size of 21x13x53 studs(17x10x42 cm).

The weght is 1.5Kgs, and has around 1500 parts

It is powered by 4 PF motors, 2 IR receivers and one PF lithium battery / AAA battery.

To get better soft curves I have used light grey pneumatic tube. But all of them have standar soft axle lengths: 7, 11, 12, 14, 16 and 19 studs, so you can use soft axles if you want.

The gullwing doors have lock. you need to push the little black part in the door to open it.

It has steering with working steering wheel (PF M motor).

Openable bonnet and trunk.

Unfortunately there are not enough space under the bonnet to add a 6L fake engine, so this time is a only a few plates to show where it must be.

The car is drive by a single PF XL motor, and the max speed is around 3kph(1.9mph).

In the rear trunk is the battery.

Realistic suspension in both axles: double wishbone in the front and swing axle in the rear.

Small size car doesn't mean poor functions, here the first proof: 4 speeds sequential gearbox.

In this car I release a whole new gearbox, 4th gen. It is very small and very very reliavable. In this car it doesn't include auto-stop function for gearbox motor (PF M motor), so you must stop the motor by yourself.

Of course it include speed indicator from the interior of the car.

And the second proof: drum brakes in all wheels.

Yes, brakes like my other big cars. In this time to save some space I have used the interior side of the rim like the drum. Powered by a M motor.

Quick bodywork disassemble. You only nned to remove 2 pins ans 2 small liftarms and the bodywork can be removed in one piece.

 "Most wanted" picture.

Finally a picture to show you the real size difference between this 1/10.5 scale car and one of my previous 1/8 cars.

Enjoy!!

You have officially built my dream car! What a fantastic job! congratulations, I hope you will make instructions for this model.

Really a great MOC. If you will make instructions... don't forget a manual version, please!

Great work as usual! I have been thinking about building a 300sl in this scale for a while but as with all my builds it is taking ages to get to, so I will definitely be getting the instructions when they come out.

when will you make the instructions

Sheepo said...

The digital files are ready, I hope they will available before christmas.

Anonymous said...

Will the instructions be like the official Lego ones?

This is a great MOC. I am definitely getting the instructions!

Otro maravilloso trabajo de mi tocayo. Enhorabuena.

Absolutely incredible. How can we get the instructions? Will there be a parts lits? I would love to build one of these to show at the Mercedes club events. OUTSTANDING WORK!!

Sheepo said...

I am working in the instructions now, I will release the instructions and the part list as soo as I finish them.

Hi Sheepo, at this moment I'm building your LandRover Defender 110, so I can say I really appreciate your work! But... I really think that you downscale your abilities by forcing yourself into this 1/10 Scale. It is true that your former 1/8 scale models are enormous, but that is just differentiating them (and other MOC's) from most of the standard Lego sets. And yes, the Defender is going to cost me about 700€ but I don't mind. It's giving me about 3 months of joy building it. So, conclusion... wonderful 300SL model but you would have done better in 1/8th... Ese critica puides condsiderir positivo Sheepo, eres mi heroe por siempre! Saludos

Sheepo said...

Good comment Nicolas, I understand your opinion, but think this: how many people can spend 700€ in a 1/8 scale car? The same car in 1/10 scale with similar specs and functions probably have half price of 1/8th.

when I get instructions for the machine ?

Anonymous said...

Hi, what wonderfull car! And your argument about the price for a car in 1/10 scale with similar specs is right, specialy for students, and for my little son ;-)
What about the release in two steps? If you release the parts list at first, many people have (an need) enough time to get the parts. So they can build their own car in any weeks by release time of the instructions.

Greetings from Germany,
Peter

Is the gearbox shifting mechanism the same as the mini

Sheepo said...

No, it is completely different

Anonymous said...

Nice work! You should make a Camaro some day...

I am 12 years old, and am trying (and failing) to make a 5+ speed gearbox

Josh said...

Hi Sheepo, does the car have front brakes? and when will the institutions be ready?

From Josh

Sheepo said...

The car has brakes in all wheels, and the instructions will be available in a few days, they are almost ready.

Anonymous said...

Could you possibly do something along the lines of a pickup truck please

Anonymous said...

isn't the drum brake weak? because the other side of the rubber is empty.

Sheepo said...

It works perfectly, it doesn't need any part in the other axle hole of the rubber part.

Anonymous said...

Does your next car has brakes too?

Anonymous said...

Hey Sheepo. Isn't the third gear same as second gear?

Sheepo said...

I never told anything about my next car before release it.

Second and third speeds are obviously different

I wish you were my friend. Love your cars.

Sheepo, You are awesome!

Snoopy said...

is that gearbox easy modified more speed? 5 speed + reverse ? why reverse missing?

Sheepo said...

There is not enough space for more speeds in the 300SL... My next car comes with a 5+R speeds version of this gearbox.

Snoopy said...

is that gearbox clutch ? do you leave clutch off that because there was no space?
Do you release more information about previous gearbox generations ?

Sheepo said...

This gearbox doesn't have clutch, it just doesn't need it.
If you want more info about previous gearboxes take a look to the available instructions.

Snoopy said...

3rd gen interest, but i need side meganism, you use 3rd gen ver.1 side do you have more information that because i try use v.2 mecanish but i got to work properly and V2 gearbox is too long! i hope you release more information 3rd gen !

Unknown said...

The gearbox's structure is based on the Mini's!I wish you could release the instructions for the gearbox alone and free! We MOC builders desparatly need them!

good share

did you use the light grey tubes or the light bluish grey ones?

Sheepo said...

LEGO light bluish grey or light grey from aftermarket company

Anonymous said...

Hi sheepo, do the brakes have return to center? in the partlist are no rubber bands.

Sheepo said...

Yes, it has, but it doesn't need rubber bands

Hello sheepo. I am thinking of building this amazing moc. Firstly I am going to buy all parts and then instructions. But I have a question. Part 41677 (technic, liftarm 1x2 thin) in black (which I need x80) is expensive in Bricklink stores in my country (Poland), not VERY expensive, but much more expensive than 41677 in light bluish gray. So here is my question: Does replacing the black ones (80) with light bluish gray ones affect/change the look of Mercedes much? If yes, how many od them can I replace without major changes?

Sheepo said...

Hi, I am not 100% sure but probably you can use the part in LBG everywhere without see any important difference.

Anonymous said...

Thank you for your answer :)

Anonymous said...

I have one more problem. I am collecting my parts now in bricklink carts and part 32126 is very expensive. However, I have this part in black, so does changing its colour to black affect the look (you know, black is definietely not light gray)? Where is this part located in mercedes car?

Anonymous said...

Moreover, Does it have white clutch gear in steering mechanism? In photos, these gears look like parts od gearbox, not steering. I am asking because I have never used M motor as steering motor and I don't want to damage it :(

Anonymous said...

And probably my last questions before buying all parts and instructions. Can I use pneumatic hoses instead of ALL of the flat silver soft hoses (7L, 11L, 14L, 19L) from this inventory https://rebrickable.com/mocs/MOC-4227/Sheepo/mercedes-benz-300sl-54-gullwing/#parts ? And I want to know one more thing about hoses. You are advanced builder, so have you ever cut pneumatic hoses? I am asking because I want to buy long V2 pneumatic hoses in light bluish gray and I want to cut them with my survival knife to get smaller ones (for example I buy 37L and I cut it to get 19L+11L+7L pneumatic hoses). Is it easy to cut them (if you know of course)?

Thank you in advance for answers!

Sheepo said...

One by one:

- The part 32126 must be in light grey color, because it is in the outside of the car.

- The steering doesn't have any clutch, but you will not burn the motor, I have never broke a PF motor in any of my models and I have more than 50 motors...

- Yes you can use pneumatic tube and cut it. Also you can buy it by meters very cheap in some aftermarker stores. You will need about 1,5 meter of tube to get all necessary parts.

Thank you so much! :)
